CULTIVATED VARIETIES (CULTIVARS)

Cultivars (let’s not call them Strains please)

Cultivars vary in their appearance, aromas as well as their cannabinoid, terpene and phytonutrient makeup.

Experts estimate that there are over 700 different cannabis plant cultivars.

01

CROSS BREEDING TO CREATE CULTIVARS

Sativa and Indica are the two primary sources of cannabis species. From these sources, selected cannabis plants have been cross-bred to develop specific characteristics.

Using the F Word

02

F = Filial

In the cannabis industry, the ‘F’ stands for ‘Filial’ (from its Latin origins). The parent cannabis plant is called the P1 generation and their offspring the F1 generation. In other words, the genetic cross of two different plants is termed the first filial generation (F1).

Cultivars Are Important

“Cultivars can take anything up to 15-20 years to develop, grow, and bring to market. They are grown to exhibit certain characteristics as well as develop increased resistance against diseases and insects”.

Fred Ruckel, Founder & Cannabis Horticulturalist

Plant Expression

03

Gene Expression – Plant Characteristics

The same cultivar can ‘express’ different characteristics. You just have to observe our cultivars to notice how wildly different each plant looks. (Even those of the same cultivar). Plants genetics and cultivation environment can impact the ‘expression’ of each single plant.
